Vor einigen Wochen hatte mein Freund mir die Vintage Burda mitgebracht und ich habe direkt einige der Schnitte ausprobiert. Für Weihnachten hatte ich das Modell Grace im Auge, ein klassisches, sehr feminines Kleid mit langen Ärmeln (kurz geht bei mir im Winter einfach nicht, auch nicht mit Strickjacke darüber). Für mein Probemodell habe ich ein Stück beerenfarbene Baumwolle verwendet, in der Hoffnung es weiterverwenden zu können falls es einigermaßen sitzt. Ich habe die Größe 36 ausgeschnitten und sie sitzt wie ich vermutet hatte an der Taille etwas locker und am Busen etwas eng, insgesamt ist es aber ok und trotz des nichtelastischen Stoffes angenehm zu tragen. Eigentlich hatte ich schon vor einigen Wochen wunderschönen Taft für ein Weihnachtskleid geschenkt bekommen, da mir die Zeit aber davon lief und das Probeoberteil in Ordnung war habe ich beschlossen damit weiterzuarbeiten. Das ich in Zeitnot geriet kam nicht von ungefähr: ich lese in der Regel die Anleitungen zu den Schnitten erst beim Nähen und hatte übersehen, dass der Schnitt Unterarmkeile verlangt, eine nicht ganz unkomplizierte Technik die ich noch nie zuvor genäht habe. Die Anleitung im Burdaheft beschränkte sich auf zwei knappe Sätze – sicherlich sehr verständlich wenn man das schon mal gemacht hat, mich ließ die Beschreibung aber im Dunkeln. Nach einiger Recherche in meinen Nähbüchern und im Internet ahnte ich was zu tun war und habe todesmutig das Oberteil eingeschnitten und die 4 Keile eingesetzt – ich bin mit dem Ergebnis ganz zufrieden und denke mein nächster Versuch sollte reibungslos klappen.

A few weeks ago my friend bought the Vintage Burda for me and I already tried a couple of the patterns. I instantly thought that the Grace pattern would make a very classic and feminine christmas dress, not least because it has long sleeves (I just can’t wear short sleeves in winter, even with a cardigan). I used a berry colored cotton for my “muslin”, hoping that I could use it for a real dress if it turned out ok. I cut size 36 and it fits as I suspected – the waist of the bodice is a bit too wide and the bust slightly too tight but overall it was quite ok and comfortable to wear in spite of the non-elastic fabric. I had originally planned to make a christmas dress of a beautiful taffeta that I had received as a gift a couple of weeks ago but time was getting short and so I decided to work with the muslin. It was not quite surprising that I was time-pressed – I usually don’t read the instructions before I actually start sewing and I had failed to notice that the pattern asks for underarm-gussets, an advanced technique that I had never done before. The instruction in the Burda issue consisted of two brief sentences that are probably very comprehensible if you are familiar with this technique but I was completely in the dark. I skimmed through my sewing books and looked for online tutorials and finally guessed what I had to do and cut in the fabric and set in 4 gussets – it looks really ok and I guess my next attempt will be even better.
Ich hatte schon seit längerem ein Stück rubinrote Dupionseide im Schrank der farblich schön zu der Baumwolle passte und daraus den Rockteil gemacht, gekräuselt wie in der Anleitung verlangt. Der Stoff hat einen schönen Stand und Glanz, sieht durch seine Textur aber immer etwas knitterig aus, was mich eher nervt. Um dem entgegenzuwirken habe ich mit Samt-Band und doppelt gelegter Seide am Saum eine Leiste angebracht, dadurch hält der Rock seine Form besser. Das rote Samtband habe ich auch am Ausschnitt verwendet, für zwei Schleifen hinten und vorne, sowie an der Oberseite des Gürtels den ich genäht habe. Beim Durchsehen der Fotos ist mir aufgefallen dass ich letzteren auch hätte weggelassen können – er betont eher dass das Kleid an der Taille etwas zu weit ist als das er es kaschiert. Dass das rote Band ganz symmetrisch auch in der Mitte des Kleides auftaucht gefällt mir allerdings, insofern ist er auch wieder gut. Die Ärmel sind als Dreiviertel-Ärmel angelegt, bei mir allerdings eher 7/8 Ärmel geworden, beim nächsten Mal würde ich sie noch etwas verlängern wollen. Der Reißverschluss ist von Hand eingesetzt, eine langwierige Aufgabe aber lohnenswert, er sieht richtig gut aus (ich habe leider kein Detailphoto davon!). Zusammengefasst kann ich sagen, dass ich wirklich glücklich mit meinem Probe-Weihnachtskleid bin, auch wenn nicht alles perfekt ist. Am letzten Wochenende haben wir bei knapp über 0 Grad einige Photos in einem Waldstück mit Bergisch Gladbach gemacht, direkt neben einer Industrieanlage mit eisüberzogenen Gasbehältern. Ich habe elendiglich gefroren, bin aber ganz stolz dass man es mir auf den Photos nicht allzusehr ansieht… :-) Ich werde die nächste Woche bei meinen Eltern an der Küste verbringen und mich dann Ende des Jahres hier wieder melden – ich wünsche darum jetzt schon mal allen frohe Weihnachten!

I had already bought a piece of ruby-red dupioni silk several months ago and made a gathered skirt of it because the colors looked looked great together. The fabric has a very nice drape and shimmer but looks slightly crumpled even directly after I ironed it which annoyed me a bit. To counteract this I enforced the hem with a red velvet trim and a double layer of silk, the shape of the skirt looks way better this way. I also used the velvet trim as a neckband, made two little bows at the front and back, and finally also attached it to the belt. I made the belt to mask that the waist is a bit too wide but when I looked at the pictures I noticed that it rather emphasises it. I really liked the common thread of the red trim though so that’s ok in the end. The sleeves are supposed to be 3/4 sleeves but are more like 7/8 on me, I will make them a bit longer next time. The zipper is handpicked, which was quite time consuming but looks so nice (unfortunately I have no detail pictures of it!). All in all I am really happy with my “muslin” christmas dress, even though it is not perfect. Last weekend we took a few pictures in a forest near Bergisch Gladbach, next to an industrial facility with ice covered gas tanks. It was just above 0 degrees celsius and I was so cold but am quite relieved that the pictures don’t show that all too much… :-) I will spend the holidays at my parents home near the baltic coast and will be back around the end of the year – I wish you a merry christmas!
