Tüll und Samt // Tulle and Velvet

Ich bin gerade wirklich produktiv (ich habe in 4 Tagen 4 Kleidungsstücke gestrickt/genäht!) und nahezu alles läuft wie am Schnürchen. Nahezu: am Sonntag wollte ich zwei der neuen Dinge photographieren, wir sind extra in das etwas bergige Umland Kölns gefahren um im frisch gefallenen Schnee Photos zu machen, der eisige Wind des Vortags hatte sich gelegt und ich fühlte mich rundherum wohl – hatte allerdings vergessen den Akku der Kamera zu laden so dass wir nur einige wenige Photos machen konnten bevor er völlig erschöpft war. Glück im Unglück wiederum dass von diesen 6 Photos 4 wirklich schön waren und auch einige der Handyschnappschüsse die wir danach gemacht haben brauchbar. Toll dass mein Freund ein so guter Photograph ist und nicht hunderte von Aufnahmen machen muss um einige wenige schöne Photos zu erhalten :-) (ich habe mir aber trotzdem vorsichtshalber nun mal einen Ersatzakku bestellt…). Meine aktuelle Nähbegeisterung liegt unter anderem auch daran, dass mein Arbeitsplatz nur etwa zwei Minuten entfernt von Kölns neuestem und wie ich finde vielseitigstem Stoffladen liegt und es allzu verführerisch ist nach getaner Arbeit dort noch ein bißchen zu stöbern. Den weichen grau-lila Tüll des Rockes hatte ich schon vor Weihnachten gekauft (ich hab mich so gefreut in einem Kölner Stoffladen feinen Tüll in nicht-Karnevals-Farben zu finden!), ich dachte eigentlich dass ich ihn für das Weihnachtskleid brauche aber da sich das anders gestaltete war ein eleganter Tüllrock dann die naheliegendste Alternative. Ich habe die 4 Meter Stoff doppelt gelegt, an der offenen Seite gekräuselt und ihn an einen schicken gold-silbernen Gummibund genäht (selbstverständlich auch von Stoff und Stil). Darunter habe ich aus altrosé-farbenenen Microsatin noch ein Futter von Hand eingenäht da der Rock trotz der vielen Meter verwendeten Tülls immer noch recht durchsichtig war.

I am super productive right now (I sewed/knitted 4 garments in 4 days!) and almost everything I try works like a charm. Almost: last Sunday I had planned to take pictures of two of my new garments and so we took a trip to a mountainous region close to Cologne to take some photos in the newly fallen snow, even the previously cutting wind stopped blowing and I felt great until I noticed that I had forgotten to charge the batteries of my camera… we only had a chance to took half a dozen pictures before the battery died. Luckily 4 of these 6 photos turned out really great and we made some acceptable enough looking snapshots with my mobile phone afterwards. It’s so great that my friend is such a good photographer and doesn’t need to take hundreds of photos to get a few nice shots :-) (I still bought an extra battery on this same evening to avoid another situation like this). My newly found sewing enthusiasm has quite a bit to do with the fact that my workplace is located about a two minutes walk from Cologne’s newest and most versatile fabric store, it’s just too convenient to spend some time there after work. I had bought the soft greyish-lilac tulle there before christmas and had originally planned to incorporate it into my christmas dress but since this didn’t happen it seemed quite natural to make an elegant tulle skirt instead. I folded the fabric in half, gathered all 4 meters of length and sewed it on a pretty silver-gold coloured elastic band (also from Stoff und Stil). Underneath the tulle I sewed on a lining of lovely rosé colored micro satin by hand since the skirt was still quite sheer.

Der Pullover ist ein weiteres Experiment – mein erster Versuch mit Strickstoffen zu arbeiten! Ich ja wirklich kein Fan bedruckter Jerseys und habe mich deswegen lange gar nicht damit beschäftigt aber ich bin bei dem den Blog Rue des Renards auf den wirklich süßen Ondée Sweater gestossen und konnte nicht widerstehen – ein taillenlanger Pullover mit Kragen ist nun wirklich was meine Garderobe braucht. In allen Farben, ganz genau gesagt. Ich habe bei Stoff und Stil hübschen schwarzen Stretchsamt gefunden und ganz ohne Overlock Maschine innerhalb eines kurzen Nachmittags den Pullover genäht, ich bin so begeistert! Der Stretchstich meiner kleinen Nähmaschine funktioniert sehr gut für alle Nähte und die Kanten habe ich mit dem Zickzackstich versäubert um den fiesen Samtflusen Einhalt zu gebieten die sich schon wieder überall in meiner Wohnung verteilt hatten. Der Kragen geht auf den Photos ein wenig verloren ist aber in Realität ein süßes Detail (Samt ist ja sowieso schwierig zu photographieren, entweder er schluckt jegliches Licht oder man sieht jeden noch so winzigen Fussel). Am Wochenende zum ersten Mal ausgeführt habe ich außerdem auch ein Plüsch-Handtasche mit Augen die ich zu Weihnachten geschenkt bekommen habe und seitdem kaum aus den Augen gelassen habe, so toll finde ich sie (♥ danke ♥). Mehr Enthusiasmus und weitere Pullover demnächst hier :-)

The sweater is the result of another experiment – my first time working with knit fabrics! I don’t like printed jersey a lot and so never bothered to learn this but recently I stumbled over the lovey Ondée Sweater on Rue des Renards Blog and could not resist – a short sweater with a collar is more than welcome in my wardobe. In every possible color, to be precise. I bought pretty black stretch velvet at Stoff und Stil and only a short afternoon later and without the help of an overlock machine I had a new sweater, I am so delighted! I used a simple stretch stitch for the seams and a zig zag stitch on the seam allowances to keep the velvet fluff at bay. The collar is not quite visible on my photos but it looks cute in reality (velvet is so hard to photograph, it either absorbs all light or alternatively even the tiniest piece of lint shows…). On the weekend I also wore my new plush handbag with eyes that I got as a present for christmas and that I love dearly (♥♥♥). Even more enthusiasm and sweaters here soon :-)

Samt-Korsage // Velvet corsage

Endlich mehr Samt in meiner Garderobe!  Ich liebe die Dramatik und Opulenz von Samt, habe aber bisher nie etwas daraus genäht weil ich schlicht nie auf preiswerten Samt gestossen bin. In Köln gibt es nun aber seit kurzem einen sehr tollen und riesigen neuen Stoffladen in dem ich in den letzten Wochen allerhand schönen Stoff und unter anderem eben auch bezahlbaren und schweren glatten Samt gefunden habe. Ich habe im Moment weniger Zeit als mir lieb ist und darum beschlossen mich auf aufwendigere, detailreichere Projekte zu konzentrieren, was nicht so kontraproduktiv ist wie es klingen mag – mir macht es Spaß über einen längeren Zeitraum und in vielen kleinen Schritten an Projekten zu arbeiten. Unter diesen Vorzeichen habe ich mich in den letzten Wochen endlich mal an Butterick B5935 gewagt und aus besagtem Samt eine Korsage und einen dazu passenden Rock genäht. Ich denke schon länger darüber nach mir ein richtiges Korsett zu nähen und eine verstärkte Korsage aus mehreren Schichten Stoff schien mir ein gutes Übungsmodell dafür zu sein. Das Fertigen der verschiedenen Lagen hat so viel Spaß gemacht dass ich ganz sicher in der Zukunft ähnliche Dinge machen werde! Zur Konstruktion habe ich auf meinem Tumblr schon ein bißchen was geschrieben – ich habe viele Dinge zum ersten Mal gemacht, wie etwa handgenähte Ösen, ein verstärkendes Zwischenfutter und das Anbringen von Stäbchenband. Letzter wird von links auf das Innenfutter genäht, welches ich aus einem sehr luxuriösem Microsatin genäht habe den ich auch als Futterstoff für den Rock verwendet habe. Mit herkömmlichen Futterstoffen habe ich in der Vergangenheit nur schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht, knitternde, wie verrückt fransende und im schlimmsten Fall auch noch abfärbende Polyesterstoffe, kein Vergnügen. Der Satin dagegen ist knitterfrei und toll auf der Haut und entgegen meiner Befürchtungen auch stabil genug für das Stäbchenband (in der Anleitung wird Baumwolle empfohlen). Als verstärkende Schicht zwischen Futter und Samt habe ich festen Nesselstoff verwendet. Aus diesem hatte ich zuvor auch ein Probemodell des Schnittes gemacht, bei dem sich schnell herausstellte dass die Größe 12 (etwa entsprechend der europäischen 36) an der Brust ok an der Taille aber um einiges zu groß war, ich habe insgesamt mehr als 10 cm Umfang entfernt. Ich hätte es letztlich sogar rundum noch schmaler machen können damit ich es noch figurbetonter schnüren kann, aber ich will mich andererseits wirklich nicht beklagen – die fertige Korsage sitzt fantastisch!

Hurray for more velvet in my wardrobe! I love the drama and opulence of velvet and the only reason that I have not sewed with it before is that I was not able to find affordable velvet before. But recently a huge and very great new fabric store opened its doors in Cologne and I bought quite a lot of gorgeous fabrics there in the last weeks and also 3 meters of black velvet in a nice and heavy quality. I don’t have a lot of time for sewing right now and for that reason decided to concentrate on more elaborate and complicated sewing projects, which is not as counterproductive as it may sound – I quite like to work on a garment over a longer time period and in many small steps. With this in mind I started to work with Butterick 5935 in the last weeks and made a velvet corsage and a matching black skirt. I would like to sew a corset in the near future and thought that a corsage would be a good thing to sew first to get some practice. And I had some much fun to work with the different layers of the corsage that I am confident that I will be able make a corset soon! I already wrote about the sewing progress on my tumblr blog  – this project involved learning quite a few new to me techniques like hand sewn eyelets, making an interlining and working with rigilene. The latter is attached to the lining for which I used a luxurious micro satin that I also used to line the skirt. In the past I made quite bad experiences with classic lining fabrics, they are usually super wrinkly poly fabrics that fray a lot and and even bleed in the worst case… the satin that I used here however was a dream to work with, it’s wrinkle free, great to touch and is also sturdy enough to attach the rigilene to it (the pattern instructions asked for cotton so I was a bit unsure if a lighter fabric would work for this). I used heavy cotton as an interfacing between the satin and the velvet and I also used it to make a muslin beforehand. I am glad that I took the time to do that because the size 12 that I made (roughly a european size 36) was fine on the bust but quite a bit too large at the waist, I ended up with pinching out more than 10 cm of fabric. Looking at the finished garment it’s apparent that I could have made it even smaller overall in order to be able to lace it tighter but I won’t complain – the finished corsage fits really great!

Apropos schnüren – meine Versuche mit metallenen Nieten sind alle nichts geworden weshalb ich mich schlussendlich für handgenähte Ösen aus Knopflochzwirn entschieden habe. 28 Ösen von Hand zu nähen hat viele Stunden gedauert war die Mühe aber wert, es sieht schön aus und ist eigentlich auch eleganter und unaufdringlicher als Gold oder Silbern glänzende Ösen. Geschnürt wird die Korsage mit mehr als doppelt so viel Band wie in der Anleitung vorgeschlagen, was den Vorteil hat das ich mir die Korsage dank dieser fabelhaften Technik selber anziehen und schnüren kann. Die Kanten der Korsage sind mit schwarzem mattem Baumwollschrägband versäubert, ein hübscher Kontrast zum sanft schimmernden Samt. Mit weniger breitem Band hätte ich das wahrscheinlich noch ordentlicher hinbekommen aber ich bin trotzdem nicht unzufrieden damit wie es aussieht. Das Schrägband habe ich dann auch beim dazu passenden Samtrock gebraucht und eine Borte mit Schleifen angebracht. Auch der Rock hat viel Handarbeit und Zeit gekostet – ich war ja beim Dirndl nähen so begeistert von der gestiftelten Schürze und habe darum zum ersten Mal von Hand den Rock mit dieser Technik in Falten gelegt was einfach fantastisch aussieht – ich denke ich werde in Zukunft wohl alle Röcke auf diese Art machen, es sieht so viel schöner aus als normale Kräuselungen! Die Korsage verdeckt auf den Fotos den Bund, hier darum wenigstens ein Schnappschuss davon.

Speaking of lacing the corset – I tried to insert metal eyelets but none of the techniques that I tried were satisfactory so I decided to make hand sewn eyelets instead. It took my quite a lot of hours to make 28 of those but it was totally worth the time: it looks really great and also maybe even more elegant and understated than silver or gold eyelets. I lace the corsage with more than double the amount of cord that the pattern suggested, this allows me to lace the corsage on my own by using this technique. I used a matte cotton bias binding to trim the corsage which is a nice contrast to the shimmery velvet. I guess I could have achieved an even neater finish with less wide bias binding but I am nevertheless quite happy with the result. I also used the same bias binding to decorate the skirt and additionally made some little bows that I attached both to skirt and corsage. There was a lot of hand sewing involved with making the skirt too – I was so delighted about the pleated apron that I made for my dirndl that I made hand sewn cartridge pleats here for the first time using this tutorial. And I am so in love with the result, I think I will use this technique a lot in the future! The corsage covers the waistband in the photos above and below but here a snapshot of the pleated skirt.

Noch einige Worte zu den Photos: am letzten Wochenende wollte ich eigentlich nach Brüssel fahren um Weihnachtseinkäufe zu machen was aber leider wegen der Terrorwarnungen nicht ging bzw. angesichts der Sicherheitsmaßnahmen kaum Spaß gemacht hätte. Wir sind stattdessen nach Ghent gefahren und haben dort zwei Nachmittage verbracht, auch wenn es eine tolle Stadt ist allerdings in wenig ausgelassener Stimmung, aus oben genanntem Grund und noch einigen weiteren. Am Sonntag sind wir trotzdem ins Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent gegangen und haben ein paar Photos meines neuen Sets gemacht, was Spaß gemacht hat und wirklich schöne Bilder hervorgebracht hat. Ein bißchen peinlich war es uns das Museum als Kulisse zu benutzen aber angesichts des mittlerweile doch ziemlich nasskalten Wetters gab es wenig andere Möglichkeiten und immerhin sind wir doch auch vor einigen Gemälden und Skulpturen länger stehen geblieben… beim nächsten Mal bin ich dann wieder aufmerksamer liebes Museum, versprochen :-)

Finally a couple of words about the photographs: I had originally planned to spend the weekend in Brussels to make some christmas shopping but due to the recent terror threats this was not possible or at least would not have been a lot of fun due to the quite severe safety measure. We went to visit Ghent instead but even though it is a lovely city our mood was rather gloomy due to the above mention reason and also for a few other ones. On Sunday we anyway went to the Museum voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent and took some pictures of my new look, which was fun and resulted in some pretty nice pictures. It was a bit awkward to use the wonderful museum as a photo background but we had not much other choices given the very cold and wet weather and we took the time to have a closer look to at least some of the paintings and sculptures… I promise to be more docile next time, dear Museum… :-)
